๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Tradie (Tradesperson) Tax Deductions Australia

All Tradespeople โ€” Tools, PPE & Vehicle โ€” your complete 2026 ATO guide.

Last updated: May 2026

If you swing tools for a living, you spend more on work expenses than almost anyone in the Australian workforce. Many tradies leave thousands on the table at tax time because they don't track tool purchases, lose hi-vis receipts, or assume their ute is automatically deductible (it isn't). This guide covers every deduction available to Australian tradies in 2026 โ€” carpenters, electricians, plumbers, mechanics, painters, tilers and beyond.

The 3 ATO golden rules

To claim a work-related deduction, you must meet all three:

  1. You paid for it personally and weren't reimbursed.
  2. The expense directly relates to earning your income.
  3. You have a record (usually a receipt).

Frequently asked questions

My boss pays a tool allowance. Can I still claim tools?

Yes โ€” an allowance is just extra wages. You can still claim actual tool purchases.

I bought a $1,200 nail gun. Do I claim it all at once?

No โ€” items over $300 must be depreciated over their effective life (around 5 years for nail guns).

Can I claim my ute repayments?

Loan repayments themselves aren't deductible, but the interest portion and depreciation are (at your work-use percentage).

Are sunglasses really deductible for outdoor tradies?

Yes. You need to show your work requires significant outdoor exposure to UV and glare.

I'm doing my Cert IV. Is it deductible?

If it relates to your current trade, yes. If it's for a different career, no.
